I made this so my daughter would stop bugging me. Basically, it's so I can comment on her stuff so she will have comments. How pathetic is she? She is yaoi_4dd1ct, so comment on her things so it's more than just me. She manages thestupiccomic and thestupidstory communities, which are her own random crazy inventions, which I generally laugh at, sometimes so hard I hurt myself.
Okay, about me. I write science fiction and fantasy (and have sold some), and I love to sing filk (songs about fantasy and science fiction). I have a degree in anthropology, which I use as background for my science fiction and fantasy. I've been in writing critique groups since before my daughters were born, so they've grown up in a writing atmosphere. My husband writes science fiction and fantasy as well. We're both active members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
I'm a grammar/punctuation/spelling mavin. I have a series of "pet peeves" in these areas in my LiveJournal posts.
As for my avatar and my username, I collect penguins--have been doing so for over 30 years. My office is awash with penguins. My family has nine cats at this point--we're suckers for strays, and love them all too much to give any away. I'm Catmagnet because they like to sit on and around me. I've awakened to find as many as six cats on the bed around me (which makes it rather difficult to sit up). I can't sit down to watch a DVD without one to three cats vying for my lap. For some reason they seem to prefer me to others in my family.
My favorite color is green. Has been for years. Everyone in my family knows the green toothbrush is mine, the green shirt is mine, the green. . . .
I am a member of the Mormon church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints). I've done a bit of genealogy and I'm interested in family history but don't have the energy to do much anymore.
I'm a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), having joined back in 1977. Again, I don't have the energy to do much with it right now, but I still enjoy it, and have a website about the "olden days" of the local SCA group, the Barony of Loch Salann.
I adore Stargate, especially SG-1. A friend got the entire family hooked on it, and now we like it so much that we roleplay a Stargate RPG about twice a month. I'm the GM. It's the first time I ever GMed, so it has been an interesting experience.
Oh, I guess I listed anime up there too. My daughters are obsessive about anime. I watch it occasionally for fun. I watch BLEACH the most, and used to watch Naruto before it wandered off into bad filler. I've actually seen all the Full Metal Alchemist episodes, and enjoyed the story. I can actually remember some peoples' names in those three! (I took five quarters of college immersion Japanese, but remember very little of it by now.) I was bemused by Ouran High School Host Club. I've enjoyed what I've seen of Deathnote and Blood+. I know I've watched others, but can't remember them all. With my husband, we brought the average age of the local Anime convention up last year by quite a bit--adding a couple of 50-somethings to the largely 15-20 age group does that {grin}.
On the down side, I have fibromyalgia, which sometimes makes it difficult for me to do the things I love doing (like genealogy and the SCA). I'm not a cheerful Mother Theresa type who keeps going despite pain and hardship. But I don't whinge too much about my disability either (except when the kids won't do anything around the house and I end up doing things that REALLY make me hurt).
Oh, what's my real name? Julia West. Go to my website at http://www.sff.net/people/julia.west to find out more about me professionally.
